On highly selective programs

While I’m as stunned as anyone that Kurt didn’t get into NYADA, because I felt sure the narrative had been telegraphing that for ages, the thing about highly selective programs is this - they are so highly selective that rejection is not necessarily indicative of your skills.

I say this as someone who has both gotten into, and gotten rejected from, highly selective things in a number of fields, and as someone with a partner in a program that some years just doesn’t let anyone in at all (she is the only one in her year in her program).

In what reality (other than the Glee reality) could Rachel get in and not Kurt?

There are a few, but the one that’s most narratively appealing is this one: need.

Rachel doesn’t know how to innovate or how to be a professional or how to be an adult, but has an amazing instrument and amazing drive. Something like NYADA will benefit her massively, she’ll graduate, get roles, and be a credit to her alma mater’s name.

Someone like Kurt needs NYADA less. He stands out without their help, has grace, and an odd sort of poise, and is actually creative. He’ll also always be hard to cast, and no matter how good he is, won’t enhance NYADA’s reputation the same way as Rachel.

Kurt’s story, over and over, again, is about the world telling him he is strong enough to survive its cruelty and unfairness. And Kurt asks, fairly, when’s it going to be his turn. It’s the worst feeling. The worst, and I think it’s about the only thing I felt, constantly, between 18 and 25.

What will be interesting will be to see if they go the route of Kurt getting into NYADA via a wait-list or something, if he goes to New York on his own for a different school, or if he heads (as Colfer has always said he’s wanted) towards fashion journalism.

I suppose he’ll get in though, and he and Rachel will be scared and miserable, both of them there by different barely there margins.

Wherever Glee goes, however, all I want is the Kurt reaction shot when Carmen Tibideau tells him he wasn’t at the top of her list because he didn’t need her, didn’t need NYADA. Because Kurt once would have found a way to have pride in the pain that caused him, but Kurt isn’t that boy anymore, and oh to see him realize it and coldly and politely give her what for.

Carmen would nod then, small and tight. Because Kurt, glorious, powerful Kurt, would have just proved her point.

(tl;dr: In another world, and another life, Kurt Hummel was Arya Stark).
